BABITA M

Stories, shaped through fashion.

Babita M is a storyteller. Her language is fashion.

For over three decades, Babita Malkani has found her stories in unexpected places, in travel, art, music, cultures, memories and objects collected along the way. Each becomes the starting point for a new capsule, interpreted through her signature language of fluid drapes, corsetry, pre draped saris and unexpected handwork.

Founded in Mumbai in 2008, Babita M grew from an instinct to create fashion that felt personal rather than predictable. Designed around a woman’s body and the life she actually lives, each piece is glamorous, distinctive and effortless to wear.

Her collections have travelled from the Baul singers of Bengal and the landscapes of Bhutan to the industrial sculptures of Arzan Khambatta, from unexpected everyday materials worked into denim to mother of pearl transformed into jewellery like embroidery.

The inspiration is never fixed. A place, a person, a culture, an object or a memory can begin the next collection. What remains constant is Babita’s instinct for the female form and her belief that glamour should never come at the cost of comfort or individuality

THE FOUNDER

BABITA MALKANI

For nearly four decades, Babita Malkani has carved an individual space in Indian fashion, building a design language defined by fluid drapes, strong silhouettes and an unconventional approach to surface and material.

Her journey began with Whispers in Mumbai in 1988, followed by the launch of her eponymous label Babita M in 2008.

Her work has been presented across multiple seasons of Lakmé Fashion Week, Dubai Fashion Week, India Resort Fashion Week and Global Runway’s Night Out, New York, while the label has retailed internationally across Dubai, New York, Atlanta, South Africa and Europe.

Her collections have drawn from art, travel and culture. Boh Aum was presented in New York, Iktar drew from the Baul singers of Bengal, while Metal Morphosis explored industrial glamour in collaboration with sculptor Arzan Khambatta.

Among the defining moments of her career was designing the exclusive winning team jackets for the ICC Champions Trophy 2009.

In 2014, Babita Malkani was honoured as Fashion Icon of the Decade.

Over the years, her designs have been worn by some of India’s most recognised names, including Sridevi, Anushka Sharma, Vidya Balan, Shilpa Shetty, Tabu, Malaika Arora, Shraddha Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, Lisa Haydon, Soha Ali Khan, Sania Mirza and PV Sindhu.

Nearly four decades on, reinvention remains at the heart of Babita Malkani’s work.
